Season One

Cheers is one of the best comedies ever made for TV, and anyone who has ever been to a place “where everybody knows your name” should watch it. The show is mainly about a bar in Boston called Cheers, a friendly neighborhood bar.

Sam Malone, who used to pitch for the Boston Red Sox, owns the bar (Ted Danson). Sam has two workers: bartender Ernie “Coach” Pantusso (Nicholas Colasanto) and waitress Carla Tortelli (Rhea Perlman).

Sam’s life is going well until he hires Diane Chambers (Shelley Long), a graduate student dumped by her boyfriend, to work as a waitress in his bar. Regular barflies Norm Peterson (George Wendt) and Cliff Clavin (John Ratzenberger) complete a strong supporting cast.

The season premiere, “Give Me a Ring Sometime,” is one of the funniest episodes on the Cheers DVD. In it, Diane spends the day in the bar while waiting for her fiancĂ©, a famous professor at Boston University named Sumner Sloane, to return from a meeting with his ex-wife, where he hopes to get his grandmother’s ring for Diane.

Sumner never comes back, so Diane gets a job at the bar. Coach is the only one who has some surprises of his own. Other memorable episodes from Season 1 include “Sam at Eleven,” in which Sam’s ex-teammate and now-sportscaster Dave Richards (Fred Dryer) comes to the bar to interview Sam for the eleven o’clock news but ends up leaving him for John McEnroe and “Pick a Con… Any Con,” in which Coach loses money to a conman and Sam has to get Harry the Conman (Harry Anderson) to help him get it back.

Season Two

The Cheers (Season 2) DVD has a lot of funny episodes and starts Sam and Diane’s on-again, off-again relationship. This is also the first season where Cliff Clavin is listed in the opening credits, even though he was in most of the episodes of season one.

Fred Dryer (known for his role in Hunter), Dick Cavett, Harry Anderson (known for his role in Night Court), and Christopher Lloyd (known for his roles in Taxi and Back to the Future) all show up as guests. Sam and Diane’s relationship is on shaky ground at the end of the season.

Season Three

The Cheers (Season 3) DVD has a lot of funny episodes and marks the beginning of Dr. Frasier Crane’s rise to fame as a TV icon. Notably, Dr. Crane was only supposed to be on Cheers for a few episodes before his character became a regular cast member, like how John Ratzenberger rose through the ranks of the show.

In episode #62, Seinfeld’s Kramer, Michael Richards, makes a memorable guest appearance. After she breaks up with Sam and quits Cheers, Coach asks Diane to return to the bar because he thinks it will help Sam stop drinking too much. The love triangle between Sam, Diane, and Frasier lasts the whole season. In the last episode, Frasier proposes to Diane while he and Diane are traveling across Europe.

Season Four

There are a number of funny episodes on the Cheers (Season 4) DVD. The first episode of the season is about how the Cheers crew remembers the late Ernie Pantusso (Coach). In the first episode, Woody Boyd, an Indiana farm boy, comes to meet his pen pal, who turns out to be Coach. However, when he discovers that Coach has died, Sam hires Woody as a bartender.

In the first episode, Diane left Frasier at the altar when the two traveled through Europe. At the end of the season, Sam falls in love with Janet Eldridge, a beautiful and smart city councilwoman (Kate Mulgrew). Diane is very jealous of Sam and Janet’s relationship, and the season ends with Sam proposing to an unknown woman over the phone.

Season Five

There are many funny episodes on the Cheers (Season 5) DVD. For example, in the season premiere, the audience finds out that Sam’s marriage proposal from the season finale of the previous year was meant for Diane. But Diane thinks Sam is still upset about Janet, so she says no and asks for a more romantic place for their engagement. When Sam asks Diane to marry him on a boat, Diane says no again. She then spends several episodes trying to get Sam to ask her again.

Carla falls in love with Boston Bruins goalie Eddie LeBec (Jay Thomas), and John Cleese shows up as a famous marriage counselor and friend of Frasier Crane. Diane leaves Sam at the altar so she can finish writing a book that a publishing house is interested in.
